BHUBANESWAR: A love-struck couple who eloped from their homes ended up tying the knot at a women's police station here.
Cameras clicked and sweets were distributed as media and police personnel watched Arun Kumar Mallick, 27, a doctor, and Mamata Mallick, 21 exchange garlands and marriage vows in the Mahila police station that served as the wedding venue.
The couple were in love for the past three years and eloped about a fortnight ago after which the girl's father filed a complaint in the police station alleging that his daughter was kidnapped, inspector in-charge Bilasini Nayak said.
She said the police then launched a search for the couple and questioned members of Arun's family. Arun then left Mamata at her home.
When the police learnt that the consenting couple were adults and their marriage was opposed by their family members, they decided to get the couple registered before the Registrar of Marriages, Nayak said.
They then tried to explain legal aspects of the situation to both families and counselled them to accept the couple.
Arun and Mamata then exchanged garlands in the police station as assembled police personnel and media persons applauded.
